Great Lakes Fleet News 2010

Farr30 Great Lakes Fleet,
So much is going on behind the scenes these days with our Farr30 class association and much of the credit must go to our new class president Deneen Demourkas and our new class secretary Carole Abbott. With a new World Council settling in to move the class ahead we are seeing renewed activity around the world. For this year I have been working with Brad Kauffman, who is the Farr30 fleet representative for the East Coast, to produce an interlocking class sailing schedule that makes sense to owners in both regions. As in the past we have attempted to maintain a four week span between class events and expect there to be a good number of owners who will be attending both East Coast and Great Lakes events throughout the racing season. The first event on the schedule is the Annapolis NOOD which takes place this coming weekend and will feature no less than three of our Great Lakes based boats in the fleet. This year the class will be returning to Annapolis on the Labour Day weekend to contest the Farr30 North American Championship. You can go to our class website at to see the various regional racing schedules and get information about regional events.
This year we are hosting the Farr30 Great Lakes Championship event at the Buffalo Yacht Club on Lake Erie. The event is being run in conjunction with an event called LYRA which is an annual event that attracts a substantial fleet of both offshore one-design and handicap classes every year. This year we will be sharing our racing circle with the Beneteau 36.7 fleet for three days of racing as they will also be running their class Great Lakes Championship in conjunction with the LYRA event. Much more information about this event will be coming soon but all the basics are in place. The racing will be held on the waters of Lake Erie near the Buffalo YC with the dates being July 30th through August 1st. We have been working with the regatta hosts and RCR Yachts to ensure this is a very economical and easy event to attend for our class. RCR Yachts, which is situated very close to the Buffalo YC, will be launching and hauling our boats for a flat fee of $200. including spar service. This will also include storage of your trailer during the event and will allow boats on trailers to arrive early and leave late as necessary to attend the event. This in conjunction with a modest $180. entry fee for the event makes for a very attractive venue for anyone travelling with their Farr30.
During the event the organizers have arranged for free docking space for the Farr30 fleet at the Buffalo YC and our fleet we be well placed immediately adjacent the yacht club facilities which will host the social program. We are anticipating a good Farr30 fleet for this event. We expect the majority of Great Lakes based Farr30 owners will be attending and we already have indications of a number of East Coast based boats that will make the trip west to attend. Last year we had a six boat fleet for the Great Lakes Championship held at Youngstown, NY and this year our goal is a fleet of twelve or more boats. Please put this event on your racing calendar now and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding any aspect of this event. There are many regional Farr30 owners that have not attended a class event in a number of years. Make this the year you get back into one-design racing and support our regional racing. The newly refurbished Farr30 Great Lakes Championship trophy now resides at the Buffalo YC with many thanks to both Brad Kauffman for getting it there and even more so to Ted Johnson of the Buffalo YC for handling the reconstruction of the trophy. It is by far the most magnificent trophy offered for competition by any regional class. It will be the proud owner who takes this trophy home in August.
I will be sending out monthly E-Newsletters to the Farr30 Great Lakes fleet to keep everyone updated and informed. If you know of anyone who wishes to receive this E-Newsletter, or an owner who may not be on my list, please pass the information on to me at your earliest convenience. Further information regarding the 2010 Farr30 Great Lakes Championship will be available soon and it will be passed on as soon as it is received.
Have a great racing season.
Kevin Brown
